UCBSA Press Release13-Feb-2003Jonty Rhodes has been withdrawn from the South African World Cup squad dueto the hand injury he sustained in Wednesdays 10 wickets win over Kenya inPotchefstroom.Rhodes suffered a break to the fifth metacarpal on his right hand when hedropped catch offered by Maurice Odumbe in the 31st over of the Kenyaninnings.The fracture was reduced under local anesthetic and two pins were insertedto facilitate union at the fracture site by immobilisation.Medical opinion is that the injury could take up to four weeks to heal withanother week needed for rehabilitation.In the light of this information and after consultation with fellowselectors, coach Eric Simons, captain Shaun Pollock and the medical team,selection convener Omar Henry has decided to withdraw Rhodes from the squad.The South African team management will submit and application together withthe relevant medical documents on Friday morning to the ICC CWC TechnicalCommittee for approval to have Western Province batsman Graeme Smith draftedinto the squad as a replacement for Rhodes.
