Southampton picked up a huge win against Aston Villa on Saturday.
Before the match kicked off, the Saints were behind the Villans on goal difference and in the relegation zone. This was a proverbial relegation six-pointer, and the pressure was on. However, they rose to the occasion, beating their rivals 3-1. That victory has propelled them out of the bottom three.
Once again, Danny Ings played a huge part in the triumph. He bagged himself a brace, which takes his tally for the campaign to 11 strikes in the Premier League and 13 in all competitions.
Calling all Premier League experts: Who do these unique statistics belong to? Find out below….
Unsurprisingly, the supporters were delighted with his display.
His influence on this side can’t be underestimated. The Saints have only managed 21 goals in the league this term to date and, as previously mentioned, Ings has 11 of them. Of the top 10 goalscorers in the league so far, no-one has contributed as high a percentage of his respective team’s goals as the former Liverpool man with 52%.
Some fans were quick to praise his partnership with Shane Long as well.
Long may not be matching Ings’ impressive goalscoring rate – in fact, he has failed to even bag once this term to date – but the two up front appear to be doing wonders for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men. The south-coast side have won two of their last four, and Long has started both of those wins.
One fan, in particular, was even calling for him to receive an international call-up.
There is no doubt that £16.2m-valued Ings – as per Transfermarkt – is on top form. Unfortunately, Tammy Abraham, Harry Kane and Marcus Rashford have all scored at least nine goals this term as well in the Premier League.
It may be a bit of an ask for him to be included in Gareth Southgate’s squad.
Southampton fans won’t care though – they will just want him to keep on doing the business for them.
In other news, Southampton are surely regretting selling this 30-year-old.
